PRECISION COACHING / YOUR COACH

Raya UsherTriathlon Coach | Coach Educator | Endurance Sports Professional

High-performance thinking.
Human coaching.

Let’s talk coaching
Raya Usher, triathlon coach and coach educator

01 / THE PERSON FIRST

Understand the person first.
Then build the athlete.

Former international athlete, World and European Championship medallist, coach educator and endurance-sports professional, Raya brings an unusually broad perspective to coaching — but her philosophy is remarkably simple:

Understand the person first. Then build the athlete.

Before triathlon, Raya competed internationally for Canada in alpine skiing, spending six seasons on the competitive ski circuit. After stepping away from elite sport, she built an international career in business and finance before discovering triathlon in 2015, joining Precision as an athlete in 2016 and beginning her professional coaching career in 2018.

Since then, she has coached hundreds of athletes, from people nervously preparing for their first triathlon to experienced age-groupers chasing podiums and World Championship qualification.

For Raya, great coaching isn’t about fitting an athlete into a system. It’s about understanding what makes that individual tick and building the right approach around them.

02 / HUMAN COACHING

Coaching with Raya

Raya coaches the person, not just the athlete.

Her coaching combines empathy with straight-talking honesty, plenty of energy and a genuine investment in the people she works with. There isn’t a standard “Raya athlete”.

Some athletes want data, detail and challenge. Others need simplicity, reassurance and confidence. Some arrive with enormous goals and infectious enthusiasm; others quietly wonder whether they’re capable of something bigger. Raya adapts her communication, motivation and coaching style to the individual in front of her.

She’s also very good at understanding that careers, children, travel, relationships, injuries and unexpected Tuesday disasters don’t disappear just because your training plan says you’ve got a three-hour ride. The goal isn’t to build your life around your training.

It’s to find the smartest way to make your training work within your life — and then discover just how good you can become.

Expect honesty. Expect support. Expect to be challenged when you need challenging and reined in when enthusiasm gets the better of you.

And expect your coach to be every bit as invested in your finish line as you are.

03 / EVERY ATHLETE, INDIVIDUALLY

Who works best with Raya?

Ambitious people with real lives.

You don’t need to be fast already.
You don’t need to be chasing Kona.
And you definitely don’t need your entire personality to revolve around triathlon.
But you do need to be curious about what you’re capable of.

Raya particularly enjoys working with athletes who want to improve but need their coach to recognise the reality of everything else going on around them; busy professionals, parents, athletes returning to sport, people stepping up to a new distance, or experienced competitors wondering whether there is another level in them.

Her experience working with neurodivergent athletes has also helped shape her highly individual approach to coaching. Athletes don’t all process information, motivation, structure or pressure in the same way, so there is little point coaching them as though they do.

Raya is equally comfortable helping someone find the confidence to reach their first start line as she is working backwards from a World Championship qualification goal.

The common denominator isn’t ability. It’s ambition.

If you’re prepared to communicate, engage with the process and do the work, Raya will bring the plan, the honesty, the experience, and probably more enthusiasm for your finish line than you thought was humanly possible.

04 / PERFORMANCE IS PERSONAL

From first finish lines to World Championships

Since beginning her professional coaching career in 2018, Raya has coached hundreds of endurance athletes across triathlon and multisport.

Athletes coached by Raya have achieved:

  • 4 IRONMAN World Championship qualifiers
  • 12+ IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship qualifiers
  • Dozens of GB Age Group qualifications
  • Dozens of podium finishes and race wins
  • 100+ first-time IRONMAN finishes

But some of the performances she is proudest of will never appear on a championship podium. Raya has significant experience working with para and adaptive athletes, including supporting newly amputee athletes learning how to swim and helping an older amputee athlete progress from competing in 5K running events all the way to completing an IRONMAN 70.3.

Because performance is personal. For one athlete, success might mean Kona. For another, it might mean swimming confidently after an amputation, completing a first triathlon or crossing a finish line they genuinely weren’t sure they would ever reach.

Both deserve a coach who is completely invested in getting them there.

05 / ON THE START LINE

She’s been on your side of the start line too

Raya’s understanding of performance began long before she became a coach.

A former Canadian international alpine ski racer specialising in slalom, she spent six seasons competing on the international ski circuit before eventually stepping away from the sport.

Years later, triathlon became her route back into competitive sport.

Since beginning triathlon in 2015, Raya has represented Great Britain internationally and competed from Sprint through to full IRONMAN distance.

Her racing achievements include:

  • 3rd place at IRONMAN Argentina
  • Earned an IRONMAN World Championship qualification at IRONMAN Barcelona
  • 3 × IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship appearances
  • European Aquabike Championship silver medallist
  • World Long Distance Aquabike Championship bronze medallist
  • Multiple World and European Championship appearances representing Great Britain
  • Multiple IRONMAN and international podium finishes

That experience matters as a coach.

Raya knows what race nerves feel like. She understands pressure, disappointment, injury, confidence, huge goals and the slightly irrational things otherwise sensible people occasionally do when there’s a finish line involved.

She’s experienced the athlete-coach relationship from both sides.

06 / COACH EDUCATION

Coaching the coaches

Raya’s work within endurance sport now extends well beyond her own athlete roster.

She is an ESCI Level 2 Certified Coach and Course Contributor for the Endurance Sports Coaching Institute (ESCI), where she contributes as a subject-matter expert in the business and professional practice of coaching.

Originally developed within the IRONMAN U coach education programme, Raya designed, wrote and presented educational modules teaching endurance coaches how to build and operate professional coaching businesses.

Her contribution included course design, written curriculum, assessments and on-camera teaching covering areas such as athlete management, business development, insurance, liability and the professional responsibilities that come with being a coach.

Following the evolution of the programme into ESCI, Raya continues to contribute to the curriculum, helping educate and develop endurance coaches internationally.

07 / INSIDE ENDURANCE SPORT

A career inside endurance sport

Raya brings another perspective to coaching that isn’t found on many coaching CVs.

Before becoming a professional coach, she spent approximately a decade working internationally across business, banking and emerging-market finance, including running her own consultancy.

She later brought that commercial experience together with her passion for endurance sport, joining Predictive Fitness, the sports technology company behind TriDot, where she has spent the past four years in senior international, commercial and coaching-services leadership roles.

Her professional career has allowed her to work closely with coaches and endurance-sport organisations around the world and at the intersection of coaching, sports science, data, technology and athlete performance.

It has also reinforced something she strongly believes:

Technology and data can make coaching incredibly powerful.

But they should enhance the relationship between athlete and coach, never replace it.

10 / YOUR AMBITION. YOUR COACHING.

Coaching isn’t about Raya

Qualifications matter. Experience matters. Race results matter.

But none of those things are the reason an athlete-coach relationship works.

The important part is whether your coach understands you.

Your goals. Your life. Your personality. What motivates you. What scares you. When you need pushing and when you need someone to tell you that doing less is actually the smarter choice.

That’s the bit Raya loves.

Whether you’re standing on your first start line, chasing a PB, trying to represent your country or wondering whether Kona might actually be possible:

You bring the ambition. Raya will bring the plan, the experience, the straight answers, and one hell of a cheerleader.
